Abolish may be a bit strong… but changes yes..

I think most of us see huge flaws in our educational systems… So a chance to take a hard look at it should be welcomed.

The questions should be…

Does it serve the nation?

Does it serve the citizen population as a whole?

Is it engaged in wasteful practices based on the response to the above?.

Does it mirror our social norms or is it attempting to change them ?

Has it got better or worse in all regards?.

To me its very clear its yes to all.

Eliminate and abolish are synonymous, yes? So no. It isn’t “a bit strong”

The Department of Education is needed. Fun fact, however, it doesn’t do half of what people say it does. It doesn’t set curriculum, for instance

Sorry, I hit send to quick. They are getting rid of it, and shoving all of its functions that they can’t get rid of, not to the states but to other government agencies…where they also want to Schedule F everyone and fire at least 50k employees. Which means that what’s left of any programs..the ones they have shifted, they aren’t going to be functional (man power vs hours in a day)

Could the budget be cut in some areas sure. I won’t argue that. But to eliminate it…is absolutely insane to me.

I agree that there should be some federal level control on education but it should be more about unification of educations so it provides mobility of certifications between states..... Also some control on what education should be provided as Its clear that its become social indoctrination not education in many instances.

I don’t think that’s clear. Most of the unification happens between the states. The National Governor’s association is responsible for Common Core for instance, not the DOE

There is zero guidance on what is specifically taught from the Feds. It’s actually prohibited by a 1965 law. I am, sincerely unsure if you’re calling for that law to be abolished or, if you think they are responsible for the “indoctrination” (not being snarky…I re read it and I’m sincerely unclear if you want federal mandates or if you want curriculum left to the states) ((It’s early, so I do apologize if my tone isn’t coming across as clearly as I like))

Ok.. first just so you know…. I am Canadain…. so may not be as up on how things south are organized but I get the same common issues here based on stateside friends sharing.

Looks like some duplication as always between fed/state and in our case fed/provinces and I always welcome getting rid of that as its typically both a waste and a confusion.

So if the feds don’t control much other than spend? then what is the value and so elimination may be a valid cost reduction..

It may make more sense for a look at how the whole education systems function both sides of the border ….as to my mind they don’t.. we can get into that if you want.

The biggest issues I see are too much anti western propaganda and learnings that don’t support the economies at all well.

As long as some unification rules exist between states what is the problem in closing it down?

Thank you for responding. One thing I hate about this type of communication is that tone doesn’t always come through and I don’t want to offend. 🙂

The DOEs main job is to ensure federal laws are applied equally, special education, non-discrimination, ect. But, it also houses higher education mechanisms, like Pell Grants and Government issued loans.

Now, I support people doing whatever they think is best for them, and no, college isn’t always best. I went to a 4 year school and wound up bartending and running hotels my whole career…my son is in trade school and I love that for him. Still, there are some benefits that don’t need to be privatized, like student loans..which is what will happen if they get rid of the DOE. It will make not just 4 year schools, but trade schools unaffordable or generally not worth the expanse for lower income students.
